The film's quality and authenticity come, in part, from the fact that it was filmed on location in San Francisco's Castro District, the city's center of gay life and the neighborhood Harvey represented on the city's Board of Supervisors before he was assassinated in 1978.
His legacy continues to influence me and many others today. The 2008 biopic of Harvey Milk doesn't cover Stonewall, but it brilliantly shows how Harvey led a civil rights movement that fought for inclusion and equality. There are lots of ways to observe the occasion, including watching the movie Milk. Monday, June 28 marks the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion, the spark that ignited the gay rights movement and the whole reason we have Pride Month at all.
